Melody Gonzales joined KOIN News AM Extra as a Multimedia Journalist/Reporter in June 2020. As a one-woman band, she writes, reports, shoots and edits her own content. Her focus is to shed light on the positive, inspirational stories of amazing people doing incredible things in Portland, surrounding communities and the world.
A self-proclaimed thrill seeker, Melody has hiked over lava fields and scaled 40-foot ice walls to tell memorable stories. Before moving to Portland, she worked at KITV 4 Island News in Honolulu, Hawaii. There, she covered the Kilauea volcano eruption that destroyed a Big Island town, jet skied across major flood waters to reach an isolated community on Kauai and interviewed the country’s last remaining Pearl Harbor survivors.
Prior to living the island life, Melody was an MMJ/Anchor/Producer in Grand Junction, Colorado. She got her start in the industry working behind the scenes at NBC Bay Area as an intern and then as a production assistant. A Bay Area native, Melody graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism from San Jose State University.
Melody is a travel enthusiast, aspiring dog mom and lover of spicy foods. When she isn’t in the newsroom, you can usually find her enjoying the outdoors, whether its running, hiking, hanging at the beach, or spending time with her family and friends.
