PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A fatal crash blocked southbound lanes of Interstate 5 for several hours near Hazel Dell on Monday, according to officials.
The Washington Department of Transportation told KOIN 6 News the collision was reported near 99th Street just before 10:10 a.m. According to a release from Washington State Patrol, one person was killed and two others were hospitalized.
The release states two cars were stopped in the right southbound lane due to an earlier crash. Another vehicle, driven by 39-year-old Mathew Miller, did not stop and struck one of the cars, which was driven by 64-year-old Judith Cherryhomes.
The impact of the crash forced Cherryhomes’ vehicle to be pushed into the other vehicle in front of hers, which was driven by 73-year-old Joseph Evens.
WSP says Cherryhomes died in the crash.
Evens and his passenger, identified as 71-year-old Sharon Evens, were both transported to a hospital. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.
Mathews reportedly walked away without any physical injuries.
After lengthy delays, lanes began reopening around 12:30 p.m.
