VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) — A man was shot by deputies with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday evening near Hazel Dell, bringing protesters to the scene almost immediately.
Authorities have not officially identified the man nor provided any updates on his condition, but the NAACP of Vancouver posted that Kevin Peterson Jr. was killed. The NAACP also said a vigil is planned for the 21-year-old at 7 p.m. Friday at the US Bank branch at 6829 NE Hwy 99 in Vancouver.
Protesters were chanting “Say his name” and “Black lives matter” among other things at the edge of the police tape. Protests continued as Clark County deputies’ SUVs were lined up and blocking the roads. Deputies were in riot gear and helmets.
It’s remains unclear what led to the deputy-involved shooting.
The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. near the 6800 block of NE Highway 99, according to the sheriff’s office. Other agencies, including Washington State Patrol and the Camas Police Department, responded to help investigate the situation. Camas PD has been designated as the lead investigative agency into the shooting.
Highway 99 at NE 68th Street was closed.
Authorities have not released any details on the situation, including whether or not the deputies or anyone else involved was injured.
Despite the lack of confirmed details surrounding the shooting, it wasn’t long until a few dozen people in the community came out to protest.
As of Friday morning, there are no reports of any major incidents among protesters and deputies.
