Man shot by Salem officer day after allegedly shooting at police

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man accused of shooting at Salem police Sunday was shot by an officer Monday morning before being brought into custody, the Salem Police Department announced in a release.

Police allege the suspect, 34-year-old Andrew Kjostad, fired shots toward officers in two separate incidents on Sunday.

Then, around 6 a.m. Monday, the department said an officer, Corporal Adam Waite, shot the suspect while attempting to arrest him. SPD said Kjostad received medical care for a gunshot wound before being taken to Salem Health for further treatment.

Monday’s incident shut down Fisher Road Northeast from Market Street Northeast to Sunnyview Road Northeast for several hours.

No officers were injured in the incident. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave.

Per protocol, the Oregon State Police will be leading the investigation in coordination with Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
