1 shot after reported attack on officer near Hillsboro Police Department

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A person was reportedly shot by an officer near the Hillsboro Police Department Friday afternoon.

According to the Hillsboro Police Department, witnesses at the scene said an officer was attacked near his patrol vehicle around 1 p.m. Authorities confirmed a shooting then occurred — resulting in the officer striking the suspect with at least one shot.

“Witnesses tell us that they witnessed one of our officers near his patrol car, seemingly randomly attacked,” said Sergeant Stewart Kelsey of the Hillsboro Police Department. “A scuffle ensued and resulted in lethal force being used by the officer. So, an officer-involved shooting.”

HPD has not released the current condition of the suspect or the officer. It’s also unclear whether the suspect fired any shots.

Authorities said there is no active threat to the public and no outstanding suspects. However, they did not release any arrest information.

Just before 6:30 p.m., HPD said Southeast Washington Street reopened between Southeast 10th Avenue and Southeast 12th Avenue after being shut down for the investigation.

MAX lines have also returned to normal service.

Kelsey told KOIN 6 News, “It’s rare for an officer in Hillsboro, certainly, to be attacked at their car. That doesn’t happen.”

While Kelsey said there have been other officer-involved shootings, including another back in 2020 on the other side of the same precinct, he noted the manner in which the suspect allegedly targeted the officer is a cause for concern.

“We train our police officers to be vigilant and aware at all times,” Kelsey explained. “Rarely do we think that we are unsafe, and rarely do we feel unsafe right next to our work home. So today is concerning, it’s troubling, it’s upsetting, and unfortunate. And I really wish it wouldn’t have happened.”

Washington County’s Major Crime Team is investigating.
