Woman falls to her death while hiking at Multnomah Falls

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman fell to her death at Multnomah Falls Friday afternoon, officials say.

At around 1:20 p.m., Corbett Fire Department firefighters hiked up the Multnomah Falls trail to a woman who had reportedly fallen about 100 feet. She was located near Wisendanger Falls, past the top of Multnomah Falls itself.

Bystanders at the scene were reportedly attempting to perform CPR — but sadly, she was declared dead at the scene. First responders say the woman was hiking with a group of friends on the Multnomah Falls-Larch Mountain trail when she fell.

It is currently unclear what led to the fall, but police are now investigating.

Some visitors from California tell KOIN 6 they saw the SAR crews pass them but didn’t know what was going on.

“It was very well-maintained, seems they do a great job of it up there but with all we were reading into rock falls here and the winter and stuff, I can tell how it can be dangerous at some points,” said Levin, visiting from California.

A representative for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office told KOIN 6 that while the gorge is a scenic destination, “due to its steep, rocky terrain, hikers are urged to be cautious and remain vigilant when visiting the area.”

The Trauma Intervention Program of the Northwest also responded to the tragic scene at Multnomah Falls, providing emotional support and mental health resources to the victim’s loved ones who were there.

MCSO says the victim’s name and hometown will be released after next-of-kin have been notified, and the cause of the fall is still being investigated.
