PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The 2019 Hurricane Season for the Eastern Pacific is now officially underway. Last year was a busy season for the east Pacific with 23 named storms, tying the 1982 mark as the 4th busiest season on record.
This graphic shows all of the recorded tropical disturbances from the 2018 season, beginning with Aletta and ending with Xavier over a 5-month span of time.
Now most of these storms don’t directly impact the Pacific Northwest, but from time to time they provide moisture for us or will create some travel problems in the summer for areas to the south or Hawaii. The season will officially begin on June 1 in the Central Pacific. They will both end on November 30.
These dates bookend the most tropical cyclones that form in the Pacific basin. According to NOAA, “long-term averages for the number of named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes are 15, 8 and 4, respectively.”
