Small dog attacked by cougar in Powellhurst area

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A small dog was attacked a cougar early Thursday morning.

Portland Police say a woman reported that her small dog was attacked by a cougar in her yard in the 3000 block of SE 118th Ave around 3 a.m.

The dog had two small wounds and was taken to a vet. Her owner Misty tells KOIN 6 that Sophia the dog was scared but is expected to make a full recovery.

The cougar was last seen heading towards Powell Blvd. Officers searched the area but haven’t found the cougar.

This is the second reporting of a cougar sighting this week. On Monday, another person reported seeing the cougar in the same area. Officers searched but could not find the cougar.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Michelle Dennehy says Oregon has a healthy cougar population of 6,400. She says neighborhoods with wildlife corridors nearby are more likely to see the cats roaming.

Dennehy says there are no increase in issues with cougars but they are seeing a few more reports of sightings in the Portland area. They are likely looking for food, so she recommends feeding pets indoors and keeping them indoors at night.
