Oregon State Police troopers responded to the crash shortly after 4 a.m. on SR Highway 18 near milepost 12.

According to the preliminary investigation, a grey Dodge Caravan — driven by Ulysses Reyes Semsem — was driving eastbound when it failed to negotiate a rightward sweeping curve.

The Dodge crossed the centerline and crashed head-on into a westbound FedEx commercial motor vehicle.

Semsem was pronounced dead at the scene.

The FedEx truck came to a rest 75 feet down an embankment and into a creek feeding the Salmon River. Both the driver and passenger were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The incident closed the highway for 5 hours and has since reopened 1 lane. A hazmat team is working on cleaning up fuel and fluid spill from the FedEx vehicle.
