Woman dies in chain-reaction crash in Polk County

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman died late Saturday night in a crash just south of Independence, Oregon.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and an OSP trooper went to the scene on Corvallis Road and found a pickup truck nose down in a ditch.

The pickup had gone into the ditch when 64-year-old Carol Nichols and her husband tried to turn around. Another pickup stopped and was trying to pull the Nichols’ truck out when a Subaru Legacy hit the Nichols’ truck on its passenger side.

The couple had been standing on the driver’s side and the Subaru’s impact caused them to be hit by their own truck.

Carol Nichols died at the scene. Her husband was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The 18-year-old Subaru driver sustained minor injuries and is cooperating with investigators. No citations have been issued.

Deputies said the other truck left the scene but they would like to speak to that driver. It was a white pickup truck, possibly with a lift. If you know anything, call 503.623.9251.
