1 dead, 1 injured in Hazelwood shooting

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – One teenager is dead and another critically injured after a shooting at an apartment complex in the Hazelwood neighborhood late Tuesday.

Police officers were dispatched to the area of Northeast 147th Avenue and East Burnside Street around 10:45 p.m. on reports of a disturbance. One of the 9-1-1 callers reported hearing gunshots several blocks away. Another 9-1-1 caller reported hearing gunshots and a person yelling for help.

Officers arrived on scene and could hear yelling in the area. The officers started searching for the person who was yelling. At that same time, learned from another 9-1-1 caller that there was a gunshot victim. Eventually, police located two gunshot wound victims.

Police say one of the victims died on scene and the other was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Kentraveon D. Hill, 18, died at the scene and an autopsy ruled his death to be a homicide by gunshot. The other teen, 17, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Police are now reviewing surveillance video from nearby apartments and businesses to see if they captured anything that might be helpful in identifying suspects.

Law enforcement officials told KOIN 6 News that witnesses reported that there was some sort of fight at the Hazelwood Apartments moments before the shooting. The fight involved several people. After the shots rang out, police say witnesses told them that several people ran from the scene.

Police have not released a suspect description.

Witnesses said police appeared to be focusing their attention and search for evidence at a playground at the Hazelwood Apartments.

Officers from the Portland Police Bureau’s Gang Enforcement Team (GET) responded to the scene to help homicide detectives with the investigation. Police have not said if they believe the shooting is gang related.

Police looked into the possibility that the shooting on Northeast 147th may have been connected to a reported shooting that happened at 9:56 p.m. on Tuesday in the 1300 block of Southeast 130th Avenue. In that shooting, no one was injured, but police did locate evidence of gunfire. Preliminary information, according to police, shows the two incidents are likely unrelated.
