Parkrose HS gunman pleads guilty, gets probation

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The teenager accused of bringing a loaded shotgun into Parkrose High School on May 17 pleaded guilty to gun charges and will not spend time behind bars.

A Multnomah County court handed down a 36-month probation sentence on Thursday to Angel Granados-Diaz, 19, under a pretrial agreement for one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in a public building and one count of unlawful possession of a loaded firearm in public.

In late May, a grand jury indicted Granados-Diaz on four charges, including two counts of being in possession a gun in a public building, recklessly endangering and possession of a loaded firearm in a public place. He pleaded not guilty at that time.

Students said they saw Granados-Diaz appear with a shotgun inside their classroom, but he was tackled by football coach Keanon Lowe. No one was injured.

“It is fair to say that some depression and mental health issues played a role in this incident,” defense attorney Adam Thayn said.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced the plea deal Thursday, saying Granados-Diaz brought the gun, which was loaded with one round, to the school grounds during a mental health crisis.

Officials said he never pointed the gun at anyone other than himself. Investigators said he made suicidal statements to another person before bringing the gun on campus.

Granados-Diaz’s lawyer said the teen was also drunk when he entered the school.

As part of his probation, the teen will receive mental health and substance abuse treatment. He is barred from entering Parkrose High School during his probation.
