PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) —  A suspect, with multiple warrants outstanding for “serious, felony crimes,” was taken into custody over five hours after originally fleeing from officers during an unrelated welfare check.

Police say Gabriel Sandoval, 27, barricaded himself inside an apartment located at 5205 Northeast Killingsworth Street for hours before he was arrested. He had six outstanding warrants for his arrest, including second-degree attempted burglary and robbery.

Portland Police’s Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were called on scene “so that they may be able to use their special tools and their special training as it relates to people who are highly motivated to remain out of custody,” said Sgt. Christopher Burley with Portland Police.

Albina Head Start and Trinity Lutheran School were on lock-down. Both of those were eventually lifted.

Police set up a perimeter, and Northeast Killingsworth was closed from Northeast 49th Avenue to Northeast 52nd Avenue. Police urged community members to avoid the area.

Portland Police said the Sandoval fled a residence in Northeast Portland at 11:23 a.m. when police approached the location for a separate welfare check. All people inside the location are safe.

The standoff had an effect on people who lived in the area. Julissa Vera-Gonzalez lives at the Villas de Mariposas Apartments, the same complex where Sandoval barricaded himself. She wasn’t able to go home for hours.

Cassandra Marquez’s mother lives there. The whole scene was a scary one for them and many others.

“My Mother said she heard a whole bunch of commotion outside, opened the window and saw basically the swat team and everything coming in,” Marquez said.

“She grabbed the children cuz she was watching a couple of the neighbor’s children and she went upstairs and hid with them.”

Eventually, after over five hours, Sandoval was taken into custody.

He’s expected to appear in court Thursday morning.
