PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was arrested after police say he was caught on camera inside a food cart in Beaverton overnight.
The owner of a cart in the BG Food Cartel called 911 to report the break-in at 12:48 a.m. on June 23.
Toshi Yokoo’s wife owns Oh My Crepe and saw the thief on surveillance video.
“Suddenly she told me ‘Someone is getting into my cart,'” Yokoo said. “I was like, what?”
The thief was getting in through the ceiling vent and jumped down into the cart to steal that day’s earnings.
“Kind of unreal, you don’t expect that to happen,” Yokoo said. “Even though it’s been possible all the time.”
Police found the suspect, Dylan Hogge, 26, walking away from the food carts and a K9 found gloves and a bandana he allegedly used in the burglary.
Police said he was carrying cash stolen from the food cart.
Hogge is being held in the Washington County Jail on charges of 2nd-degree burglary, 2nd-degree theft and 2nd-degree criminal mischief.
Dean Biggi, the owner of the Food Cartel, told KOIN 6 News the truck next to Oh My Crepe was also targeted a few days before.
“All of our tenants are trying to make a living and when people break in, they do damage, they steal their money, it sets them back — sometimes a month’s worth of their income,” Biggi said.
Last year 8 carts were broken into and since then, Biggi has upgraded security with cameras, extra locks and patrols.
“I think for the thieves they think it is an easy target than a big building,” Biggi said. “Because big buildings do have cameras, they do have alarms and a lot of these carts — they just know that it is an easy target.”
