PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Gage Halupowski was sentenced to 70 months in prison after assaulting a man in Portland during the mass demonstration on June 29.
The assault occurred in the midst of a larger scuffle at the politically charged demonstration. A person was being chased by a group of people on Southwest Morrison Street in Portland before ending up on the ground, getting kicked and hit over and over. Police then witnessed a man named Adam Kelly attempt to pacify the situation.
When Kelly eventually gave up and began to move away from the crowd, Halupowski ran up behind him — hitting him hard on the head with a metal baton.
“The sound of the blow was sickening and caused people who heard and saw it to gasp,” said Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Melissa Marrero. “The intentionality of Mr. Halupowski was extremely egregious and the injuries to Mr. Kelly could have been much worse.”
Halupowski was quickly arrested after the assault. He was sentenced on Friday after pleading guilty in court.
