Armed robbery suspects who tried to elude police at speeds around 100 mph ran from a vehicle after getting off the highway in the Hollywood District and were believed to be hiding in a Northeast Portland neighborhood have now been arrested.

PPB Sgt. Kevin Allen said they’re not calling all 5 in custody “suspects” but the investigation is ongoing. But he said they feel comfortable enough to end their intensive search.

The incident began around 1:45 p.m. when police were called to an armed robbery of a marijuana shop in the 2800 block of NE Sandy. A description of the suspects and their getaway car was provided.

About 15 minutes later, an officer spotted the suspect’s car around NE 99th and Prescott, officials said.

“The officer attempted to stop the car, which did not comply with orders to pull over,” Allen told KOIN 6 News. “A brief vehicle pursuit was started. The suspects got off on the I-84 freeway and were going roughly 100 mph 0n the freeway, so very dangerous, concerning behavior.”

The suspects got off I-84 at NE 43rd and jumped out of the car and ran, police said. Authorities described the suspects as teenage males.

Police set up a perimeter in the Hollywood District neighborhood, and part of the search took place near the Hollywood Transit Center.

Mattie Cagle, who lives in the area, said it would be easy for officers to respond to that location quickly because there are always heavy patrols in the area.

“I’m a little bit surprised by that honestly. I wondered why all the cars were out here,” Cagle told KOIN 6 News. “I’m a little bit surprised that things are happening over here because there is usually a police presence and that kind of thing, but, hey, people get bold.”
