PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man who was shot early Sunday in the Buckman neighborhood of Southeast Portland was “dropped off” at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, where doctors confirmed he died, police said.
Shots rang out around 1:15 a.m. near the corner of SE 9th and Ash. When officers arrived they found evidence of a shooting but no victim. But they learned he left the scene.
Officers went to the hospital and found out the man had “just been dropped off.” Doctors then confirmed he died. It is not clear at this time if the man was already dead when he was “dropped off.”
The man was not immediately identified and no arrests were reported. Authorities have not released further details on the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Detectives from the PPB’s homicide unit are now investigating.

This is the weekend’s second confirmed deadly shooting in Southeast Portland. Early Saturday morning, officers on patrol in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood found a man shot who died of his injuries.
He was identified Sunday as 52-year-old Jose Monroy Castaneda, and his death was ruled a homicide. It’s the 30th homicide in Portland so far this year, the 29th by gunfire. Looking at the homicide numbers for this same time last year, Portland has already exceeded that number.
No arrests have been announced in that shooting.
It’s been a busy weekend for Portland Police with at least two deadly shootings within 24 hours of each other. Despite 2021 being a record-breaking year for homicides in Portland, the city has already seen more this year than the same time last year. Residents said it’s unsettling.
“It’s actually sort of terrifying, in a sense,” said LaRisha Baker with Multnomah County Health Department. “It tests your sense of security and just us as a community.”
Earlier this month, a PPB homicide detective spoke with KOIN 6 News about the growing number of homicides — as the city remains on track to once again break its own record.
“There’s a serious disregard for human life going on in this city,” Sgt. Michele Hughes told KOIN 6 News on April 12.
This weekend, KOIN 6 News caught up with activists speaking out against the growing violence and murders, following another deadly shooting early Saturday morning.
“Our community will not stand for this destruction and death and violence. This is not normal,” said one speaker.
