PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An arrest was made after an hours-long standoff with a carjacking suspect Portland police say ran from officers and entered a private home on Tuesday night.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers responded to a report of a stolen car at a fast-food restaurant near Northeast 103rd Avenue and Northeast Weidler Street. When police arrived and spotted the stolen vehicle, they say the suspect — identified on Wednesday as 30-year-old Christopher O’Connor — exited the car and entered a different restaurant where he went into the kitchen and armed himself with a meat cleaver.
PPB used a stun gun on O’Conner, but the individual was able to flee from the restaurant and carjack a passing motorist. The carjacked vehicle was located by police on Northeast 122nd Ave, where the man allegedly attempted to carjack other vehicles.
Once again, the suspect ran inside a home where police and members of the Crisis Negotiation Team attempted to negotiate with them. O’Conner was found inside the home’s attic and was ultimately taken into custody.
There are no reported injuries to any of the victims.
O’Connor was booked in the Multnomah County Detention Center on several charges, including two counts of first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary, two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and fourth-degree assault. Police say he also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
