Nationwide search for suspect in Powell Butte homicide

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A nationwide arrest warrant was issued for the boyfriend of the 27-year-old woman found dead at Portland’s Powell Butte Nature Park on Friday, according to Portland police.

Jose Caraballo, who has known connections in Oregon, California and Mexico, is wanted for the death of Kathryn Muhlbach, whose body was discovered in the Southeast Portland park shortly after 3 p.m. December 9.

A medical examiner determined Muhlbach’s death was due to homicidal violence. She was 27.

Caraballo, 43, has many visible tattoos and other tattoos that are generally covered. Authorities ask anyone who sees Caraballo or has information on his whereabouts call 911 immediately. The nationwide warrant for Caraballo is for 2nd-degree murder (domestic violence).

Authorities believe he fled the Portland area.

Crime Stoppers of Oregon is offering a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest.

In a statement to KOIN 6 News, Muhlbach’s family said:

“Kathryn was an amazing mother, she was loved by everyone she met, she had an amazing fiery personality, she was a strong and independent woman. She was the person you would always lean on, in a time of need. She was the rock of our family.”
