PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — In a continued crackdown on street racers, 6 people were arrested this past weekend by Portland police in a focused effort in North and Northeast Portland.
Over July 27-28, police said they made 19 traffic stops and towed 4 cars along with arresting 6 people.
In a statement, PPB Chief Danielle Outlaw thanked those involved in planning and doing this special enforcement.
“This has been an ongoing issue and we have been working with our partners at the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office to look for new strategies to hold participants accountable,” Outlaw said.
Three of those arrested — Tea Sue Engdahl, Aaron Flores and Willie Holloway — were charged for reckless driving and speed racing. Ian Michael Steffens faces a reckless driving charge.
Karim Gardner, 37, was arrested for hit-and-run, while 18-year-old Hilario Garcia faces a felony charge for eluding plus reckless driving.
Earlier this month in a similar operation, two people were arrested and 22 others were given citations.
At least four people have died in Portland street-racing related crashes in the past four years. A fatal crash in Beaverton in mid-July was a result of street racing, according to authorities.
