Shooting suspect remains at scene while potential victim runs off, police say

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland police are searching for a person reportedly involved in a shooting incident.

The Portland Police Bureau responded to reports of shots fired near Southwest 62nd Avenue and Southwest Pomona Street just before 10:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. They said it was still an active call as of 11:55 a.m.

Authorities tell KOIN 6 News the person who fired the gun remained at the scene — while the potential victim fled the area. It’s still unclear if the person was actually hit by any gunfire, as police are still looking for them.

Members of the community were also concerned by the event.

“I come out to walk my dog and there’s cops everywhere, it’s crazy,” said neighbor Jamie Valdez. “It’s nerve-wracking, I have a 16-year-old, so it’s nerve-wracking.”

According to PPB, it’s believed the two people knew each other and this was not a random act.

There is a large police presence in the area with a perimeter in place, but officials say no major roads are closed off at this time.

There’s been a huge increase in homicides and shootings in the last couple of years. Tuesday night, police say a man was shot and killed in North Portland, on North Peninsular Avenue.

PPB says their officers arrived at 9 p.m. and found the victim. They say they attempted first aid but the man died at the scene.

“The death last night on N. Peninsular will be the 81st case that we’re investigating as a homicide, said PPB Sergeant Kevin Allen. “Of that, there’s three that have not been officially declared homicides yet, but we’re investigating them as such. Unconfirmed data indicates we have responded to 1071 shootings year to date, with 328 injured.”

This is a developing story.
