Slashed tires, bewildered residents in Roseway neighborhood

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Nora Furst said her Saturday morning got off to a rough start when her neighbor in Portland’s Roseway neighborhood knocked on her door.

“She let me know that every car in our neighborhood had their tires slashed, mine included. So it was a pretty not nice way to wake up,” Furst told KOIN 6 News.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday a resident in the 2800 block of NE 72nd called police about having 2 tires punctured overnight. The officer then found more than 30 people within the area of NE 72nd to 77th between Sandy and Alameda also suffered tire damage.

As the investigation continued another 20 victims in a multi-block area west of Roseway Heights Middle School, officials said.

“A search of the entire neighborhood found 30 — actually we think more than 30 cars- were damaged or vandalized in some way,” PPB Sgt. Kevin Allen said. He added they don’t have any suspect information to release, “but we are pretty early on in the investigation.”

“It’s really frustrating,” Furst said. “It feels very senseless, like, what’s the point?”

Other neighbors, like Bruce Humberstone, woke up to find their tires slashed on multiple vehicles, damage which he said has already cost him more than $600.

“My son came out and looked at the car, he was going to go to the gym, and it was flat,” he said. “So, he jumped in our car and didn’t realize all four tires were flat, so he drove and got up to Halsey before he realized, ‘Hey, this isn’t working right.'”

Neighbors who spoke with KOIN 6 News said they’re glad no one was hurt. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t upset.

“It’s kind of the fringes of anarchy,” Humberstone said. “Our society is kind of upside down right now, at least in Portland and the whole world.”

There may be more victims. Police said anyone who needs to make a police report can go to their online reporting site and reference case number 22-263990. Photographs and invoices with damage costs are also beneficial.
