2 injured, 2 detained after shooting involving U.S. Marshals in SE Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two people are hospitalized while two others are detained after a shooting involving U.S. Marshals Service occurred in Southeast Portland on Monday afternoon.

Around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, the U.S. Marshals reportedly told the Portland Police Bureau they would be present in the inner east part of the city while looking for a wanted person out of Washington. Within four hours, shots were being fired.

According to PPB, two men were injured in a shooting involving U.S. Marshals. Officials said a robbery suspect was shot by a Marshal. Another man who was in the car with that suspect was also injured, although it is unclear if that person was shot.

Meanwhile, two women were reportedly detained. Details as to why have not been released.

PPB says none of their officers were involved in the incident. They also confirmed no law enforcement personnel were injured.

Michelle Barrett, whose office is on 11th, had just returned from lunch when she heard a gunshot.

“I get up and I look out the window and I can see a Marshal drawn down on somebody in the driver’s seat of that gray SUV which is right next to my truck there,” Barrett said.

Portland police are leading the investigation but say right now they’re not sure what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.

Barrett said while she didn’t get a clear view of the suspect, she saw much of the ordeal unfold and is thankful no one else was hurt.

Douglas Carman, whose apartment is at 11th and Burnside, was walking his dog when he believes he heard that same gunshot, then saw and heard law enforcement at the scene.

“I heard more than one saying ‘show me your hands, show me your hands,’” Carman said.

Carman added “I happened to look south on 11th and there was a police officer with his weapon drawn pointing towards that parking lot.”

PPB told KOIN 6 News a robbery suspect was shot by a U.S. marshal and another man who was in the car with the suspect was also injured, although it’s unclear if that person was shot.
