PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man living in the Portland’s Northwest district told detectives he could hear his lungs filling with blood after being shot during a home invasion.
The home invasion happened on Feb. 23 in the 2000 block of Northwest 21st Avenue, court documents said.
Police arrived and found five, 40-caliber shell casings and three, 9 mm shell casings. The 40 caliber rounds came from the suspect’s gun. The 9 mm rounds came from the victim’s gun.
The victim spent several days in the hospital before being able to speak with detectives. On Feb. 26, he told police that he was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom when he heard a loud crash. He said it sounded like someone was breaking into his residence. He grabbed his gun, the 9 mm, and went downstairs.
The victim saw two men inside the residence. One was in the kitchen, the other in the living room.
Detectives reviewed surveillance video from the neighborhood. In that video, police identified Michael Wise.
He was interviewed by Portland police on March 6. Wise admitted going to the victim’s residence. He said he met up with a female who knew the other person involved in the home invasion.
According to Wise, they all talked about going to the victim’s residence to commit a home invasion because they knew he would have cash and pills on him, according to court documents. Wise said over and over that he didn’t shoot anybody.
Wise said when the victim came downstairs and interrupted the burglary, the other guy fired the shots from the living room, according to court documents.
Police have not said if they have identified the other suspect.
The victim, recalling the incident, told police that he held his gun to his side and yelled out “hey,” thinking that it would scare off the intruders.
“All at once, the guy in the living room started shooting at [the victim,]” according to a probable cause affidavit. “He felt a bullet enter his chest.”
The guy in the kitchen turned and ran away.
The victim started shooting at the man who was shooting at him. As he was doing that, the victim moved up the stairs.
“He felt another bullet enter his back,” according to court documents.
The victim tried to call 9-1-1 several times, but his phone was covered in blood. Eventually, he was able to get through to emergency dispatchers.
The victim told police that he has a pill and heroin problem and that he had just refilled his prescription. Records show the pills go for $30 each and that he had 150 of them.
