Driver released from hospital, police waiting for him

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) �?When doctors released a 28-year-old man from the hospital, police were there waiting to arrest him.

Christopher Allen Schmidt appeared in court on Thursday at the Multnomah County Justice Center.

He is charged with one count each of first-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, DUII, reckless driving, and three counts of fourth degree assault. Those charges stem from a crash that happened last month.

Schmidt was driving a tan 1994 Honda Accord westbound on Holgate at a high rate of speed when he ran the red light at 92nd Avenue, colliding with two other vehicles on the roadway, according to Portland Police.The deadly crash happened in the early morning hours of on Friday, April 22.

The rear passenger, Theodore Swan, 49, was taken to the emergency room hospital with life-threatening injuries. Swan later died at the hospital.

Schmidt’s front passenger, a 25-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. She was released from the hospital on April 27.

Schmidt is also charged with one count each hit and run and second-degree criminal mischief and two counts of fourth-degree assault from a crash that happened on April 13, according to court documents.

Schmidt lives in Northeast Portland, and has three felony convictions on his record. When the deadly crash occurred, Schmidt was on release supervision for a unauthorized use of a motor vehicle case.

Since the April 22 crash, Schmidt has remained under observation at OHSU. He was arrested by the Portland Police Bureau’s Traffic Division.

Schmidt is due back in court on May 13.
