‘Jaws of life’ used to cut person from SUV

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland firefighters had to cut the top off a compact SUV Saturday morning to rescue the driver trapped inside.

Firefighters were called to Northeast Knott and Northeast 20th Avenue just before 2:00 a.m. Saturday. The SUV had struck a large tree on the driver’s side door, causing the door to cave in. Officials said it was jammed shut. The dashboard had also crumpled, trapping the driver’s leg.

Firefighters needed to cut the top off the car using reciprocating saws and a hydraulic cutter, commonly referred to as the ‘jaws of life.’

The driver was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver was the only person in the car.

Portland Police are investigating the crash.
