MCSO: Boater accused in death violates restraining order

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Steven Curtis Schalk, already facing charges including manslaughter, was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday on allegations he violated the conditions of his release.

Schalk is under a 3-count indictment of 1st-degree manslaughter, 2nd-degree manslaughter and recklessly endangering another person. Those charges stem from an incident on May 22, 2017 when he and Heidi Knight were ejected from a boat which sank in the Columbia River after running into a bridge abutment.

The boat sank after hitting a bridge pylon at a high rate of speed, May 22 2017. (MCSO)

Knight died after being rushed to the hospital. Schalk was identified as the driver of the boat.

Court documents revealed a sheriff’s deputy reported “the defendant continued to have a carefree attitude” while being contacted by first responders.

After being booked into jail, Schalk posted $10,000 bail and was released.

Earlier this month, the Multnomah County Pretrial Release Supervision program filed an affidavit requesting a judge revoke Schalk’s bail.

While at a casino, authorities allege, Schalk violated a temporary restraining order and was taken into custody February 27. He posted bail and was again released.

His court appearance scheduled on Wednesday will give his initial case, the boat crash, new dates.

Schalk is represented by criminal defense attorney Celia A. Howes. KOIN 6 News reached out to Howes for a statement but has not yet heard back from her.

Schalk’s next court date is scheduled for March 2.
