BOISE, Idaho (AP) – An Oregon man accused of writing letters threatening to assassinate the president was arrested after he reportedly cut off his GPS monitoring device.
The Statesman reports Stephen G. Smith is to appear in federal court in Boise on Monday. It wasn’t immediately clear where he was arrested or by which agency.
A representative at the Ada County Jail said Saturday that Smith had been booked into that jail.
A federal judge in Eugene, Oregon, on Friday issued a warrant for Smith’s arrest. In court records, a U.S. Secret Service agent said Smith was placed on GPS monitoring when he was released from Malheur County Jail a week ago but he cut off that device and was nowhere to be found.
The agent said Smith wrote two letters threatening to assassinate the president. Last month, Smith reportedly told a federal agent he planned to hitchhike to Washington D.C. and shoot Obama.
