PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The young couple who are each facing 6 counts of attempted murder after a shooting in Northeast Portland pleaded not guilty during their first court appearance Monday afternoon.
Raul Marquez and his girlfriend Cheyenne Trujillo were arrested not long after shots rang out shortly after midnight Sunday in the 6500 block of NE Killingsworth. No one was hit by the bullets.
Marquez, 23, and Trujillo, 20, were stopped soon after. When they were arrested, a pistol was recovered, police said.
Trujillo and Marquez are facing a combined total of 37 charges in this case. They’re both charged with 6 counts each of:
> Attempted aggravated murder with a firearm
> Attempted murder with a firearm
> Unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm
Marquez is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and is being held without bail. He has already been previously convicted of 3 felonies, 2 misdemeanors and a parole violation. His convictions include carrying a concealed weapon, assault and riot with a deadly weapon.
He lives with his mother and is the father of 2 children.
Trujillo — who according to documents obtained by KOIN 6 News has been Marquez’s girlfriend for 7 months — has no previous convictions. Her bail was initially set at $1.5 million.
Both Marquez and Trujillo will need to be evaluated before any determination about posting bail, and both are expected back in court March 19.
Documents indicate neither Marquez nor Trujillo knew any of the potential victims.
Probable cause documents
The probable cause documents revealed the investigating detective said Marquez is a known member of the 18th Street Gang, and that one of the men shot at is in a rival gang.
Documents also revealed that one of those shot at followed the Marquez car — a black Dodge Durango — for several blocks. The Durango ran several red lights before pulling into a gas station.
Trujillo was driving and Marquez tried to run away. The documents said police found a gun under the driver’s seat with 3 fired shell casings and 3 live rounds still in it.
Both Trujillo and Marquez were taken into custody in the area of the 8800 block of Sandy Boulevard.
Neighbors said this is the 5th drive-by shooting within the past month or so. One person was shot in the leg last month. Neighbors told KOIN 6 News the reason this couple got caught was because one person was in a vehicle at the time of the shooting and followed them.
