Body found on SE Portland street prompts death investigation

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland Police Bureau is conducting a death investigation after a body was found in the Hazelwood neighborhood early Monday morning.

Around 3:30 a.m., a heavy police presence responded to a welfare check in the vicinity of Southeast 141st Avenue and Southeast Harrison Street. At the scene, officers discovered a man deceased in the street.

Police did not release the man’s name and the medical examiner has not yet confirmed his cause or manner of death.

Neighbors told KOIN 6 News they woke up to police in their neighborhood.

“I woke up early this morning, around four in the morning to get a glass of water and noticed all of the cop cars outside. And then I noticed there was a body lying in the street,” neighbor Jessie Tenney said. “It’s just been a strange, surreal day.”

Other neighbors, who did not want to be identified due to safety concerns, told KOIN 6 News they did not hear the gunshots overnight.

This investigation follows a fatal southeast Portland shooting last week in the Foster-Powell neighborhood. On Monday, police identified the victim in that shooting as Rene Ramirez Martinez.
