PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 12-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were injured in Northeast Portland in an early morning shooting Thursday, authorities said.
The Portland Police Bureau told KOIN 6 News the injured children were two of five kids in a car that had been shot up at least 11 times, with a total of 38 bullet casings found at the scene. The kids in the car ranged in age from 12 to 14 years old.
Just before 3 a.m. Thursday, Portland police were called out to a cul-de-sac on NE Rocky Butte Lane, near Interstate 205 and Interstate 84.
The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, while the girl who was grazed with a bullet was treated on scene, according to police. The boy is expected to survive, authorities said.
Investigators say two houses and a resident’s car were also hit by bullets in the shooting.
“Being a Portlander for 14-15 years– it’s getting out of hand,” said Dustin Guest, who found dozens of bullet casings at the end of his driveway.
Bruce Duncan, whose house was hit by stray bullets, was getting ready for work when the shots rang out and nearly hit him.
“Bullets started coming into my house as I was just finishing up my breakfast,” he said. “I was just about to step into my dining room and I hear this pop pop pop pop. I heard shattering glass and I immediately jumped on the floor and called 911.”
Sergeant Kevin Allen of the Portland Police Bureau had this to say, “This is a tragic case because we are talking about five kids that were targeted by somebody with a gun…this one raises eyebrows even more for us as well.”
No suspects were immediately arrested, but Police are looking for more witness information to help solve this case and hold the shooters accountable.
“The police told me they thought it was kids shooting at other kids,” Duncan said. “The shots came through my house at 2:52 AM. The question is why are there children up here at 2:52 AM? That’s a question I have for parents.”
