CLACKAMAS, CO., Ore. (KOIN) — A man is accused of shooting 2 trespassers to death in Beavercreek Tuesday, deputies said.
Robert John Hilands, 33, was arrested after confessing to killing the men, whose bodies were found on his property near Upper Highlands Road just before 6 p.m. on March 14.
The victims, 40-year-old Dustin Childress and 50-year-old Thomas Lee Hegar, were reportedly dropped off on the private property around 10 a.m. Deputies said they were trespassing on Hilands’ property, which is a forested area.
“It had been reported that 2 males were on the property and had been shot at,” Sgt. Brian Jensen with Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said. “Their girlfriends responded to the scene and were unable to locate them. That’s when they called us.”
Detectives said about 15 minutes later, Childress called one of the women to say they were being shot at, and that Hegar was injured. It wasn’t until more than 7 hours later, at 5:46 p.m., that one of the women called 911.
Deputies found the 2 bodies concealed under the property’s front gate while searching Hilands’ property. He agreed to the search and an interview with detectives and later confessed to killing Childress and Hegar.
Hilands was booked into Clackamas County Jail on 2 counts of aggravated murder and 2 counts of unlawful use of a weapon. He was arraigned Thursday and will be held without bail.
