SALEM, Ore. (KOIN) — At the south end of the popular Riverfront Park in Salem, Oregon, sits a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. A globe, three stories tall.

Once a storage tank for chemicals used in the paper-making process, it spent the 1960s floating from the shipyards in Portland to Salem. When the mill closed, the “acid ball” stayed.

Ken Boddie takes a trip to Salem to talk to one of the people behind the original effort to turn a relic of a bygone era into a community project.
