Fly Creek Fire prompts Level 3 evacuations in Jefferson County

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Evacuation notices have been issued as the Fly Creek Fire continues to grow near Lake Billy Chinook, US Forest officials tweeted Sunday night.

The Jefferson County Sheriff issued a Level 3 “GO NOW” fire evacuation for the Perry South Campground and Monty Campground. A Level 2 “GET SET” fire evacuation was issued for the Three Rivers area.

The fire is burning near Balancing Rocks on Lake Billy Chinook and is growing quickly, according to officials. As of 11 a.m. Monday, the fire is 5% contained but has spread to 280 acres — 9 times the size reported on Sunday.

Aerial support is dipping out of Lake Billy Chinook to help with containment. Several loads of retardant was dropped on the fire Sunday night, according to Central Oregon Interagency.

A passing lightning storm started multiple fires near the Sisters Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest on Sunday, according to officials. The National Weather Service issued A Red Flag Warning across central Oregon as another round of thunderstorms is expected into Monday night.

Nearly 10-air miles from the Fly Creek fire, fire officials say crews are busy mopping up the 1-acre Juniper Creek fire.

Sections of Lake Billy Chinook are closed Monday.
