Woman tries to save cat, dies in Hillsboro fire

HILLSBORO, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman died in a mobile home fire early Monday morning after she tried to save her cat, officials said.

Hillsboro police said 55-year-old Cynthia Ann Stephens was found dead in a mobile home community at 1901 SE Minter Bridge Road shortly before 5 a.m. Her husband Larry made it out of the home safely.

Lt. Henry Reimann with Hillsboro Fire said, “When fire crews arrived, they found the gentleman who lives in the residence outside.”

The couple’s cat and dog were also in the home when the fire broke out. Police later learned that Cynthia was about to leave the home, but as she approached the doorway, she went back in to look for their cat.

Officials found the cat dead in the home. The couple’s dog was found at a neighbor’s home and is in good condition.

No other homes were damaged and the Red Cross assisted in finding Larry a temporary residence.

Reimann said the cause of the fire was electrical.
