After a year-long process spent searching for a new director of the Joint Office of Homeless Services, Multnomah County officials announced Wednesday that they’ve found a candidate to fill the role and lead the county in addressing one of its greatest challenges. 

After Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler shook-up city bureau assignments as the city changes its form of government under the new city charter, Commissioner Carmen Rubio is tasked with new responsibilities — namely, tackling Portland’s housing crisis.

City leaders are preparing to approve a $7.1 billion budget for Portland, while at the same time, searching for a way to lower the region’s tax burden.

Numerous times over the past month Portland firefighters have had to put out fires from homeless camps underneath bridges.

City and county leaders are changing their plans to address the homeless crisis after Gov. Tina Kotek chose to withhold funding from the governments — saying their plan did not have enough detail for how the money would be  used.

The Oregon Department of Transportation and the City of Portland have a deal where ODOT provides the city $2 million per year for homeless camp cleanup on ODOT Rights of Way. However, the city is already tapped out.

Multnomah County Commissioner Sharon Meieran wants the county to look into purchasing a 241-room hotel in Northeast Portland for a homeless shelter and supportive housing for Portlanders with mental health issues.

Chaos erupted at Portland City Hall Wednesday morning as heckling and protests over homeless policy led to a physical attack.
