A new report by federal officials says homelessness is on the rise nationwide, up 18% as affordable housing remains out of reach for many people. It’s the highest recorded since reporting began in 2007.

On a single night in January, this tally is taken across the country, finding Oregon has some of the highest levels of homelessness.

2024 was a pivotal year in politics. Portland elected a new mayor and a new expanded city council under an entirely new system of government. This year also saw the deaths of two of the most powerful men in the history of Oregon politics. Former Oregon governor and former Portland Mayor Neil Goldschmidt died in June, and long-time Oregon senate president Peter Courtney in July. But while Courtney was honored and revered, Goldschmidt's legacy is forever tainted.
