PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Warming shelters in the tri-county area are open Sunday night as frigid temperatures hover throughout the region.
Multnomah County officials added a 5th warming shelter to the mix for Sunday, giving more people a chance to stay warm, dry and sleep.
The 5th shelter at the Charles Jordan Community Center has 150 beds set up.

Rachel Pearl with Multnomah County said they nearly doubled the number of available beds from Saturday’s 270 to more than 400. County officials said they saw higher than normal calls for hypothermia, with 4 people treated at emergency departments.
“We did have more calls for hypothermia (Saturday) night, and we anticipate that (Sunday night) is going to be even colder,” she said. “So that’s why we’re opening more capacity for folks to get inside and get out of the cold elements so that they can stay safe and avoid getting hypothermia, medical treatment, or worse.”
The county has temperature thresholds for when warming shelters open. Pearl said when it gets below a certain temperature the shelters open “because we deem these evenings as being life threatening.”
The Multnomah County shelters will be open until 8 a.m. Monday. All accept pets and are ADA accessible.
Officials will continue to monitor the forecasts and decide Monday if they shelters will open again Monday night.
Multnomah County
Multnomah County announced 5 shelters will open at 8 p.m. Sunday. They are:
- Arbor Lodge, 7440 North Denver Avenue
- The Portland Building, 1120 Southwest 5th Avenue
- Salvation Army Moore Street Gymnasium, 5325 North Williams Avenue
- East Portland Community Center, 740 Southeast 106th Avenue
- Charles Jordan Community Center, 9009 North Foss Avenue
Free transport is available via TriMet or by calling 211.
Washington County
In Washington County, two shelters opened on Saturday and will remain open until the cold weather passes.
- The Salvation Army Building, 1440 Southeast 21st Avenue, Hillsboro
- Beaverton Community Center, 12350 Southwest 5th Street, Beaverton
The Washington County shelters are providing hot meals, and will not turn anyone away.
Clackamas County
Clackamas County announced that its three shelters would be open Sunday night.
- Father’s Heart Street Ministry, 603 12th Street, Oregon City
- Molalla Hope Center, 209 Kennel Avenue, Molalla
- Zoar Lutheran Church Extreme Weather Shelter, 190 SW Third Avenue, Canby
