PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Over 2 months after it sparked, the Eagle Creek Fire is now 100% contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The U.S. Forest Service also said even though the fire is contained, it’s still not completely out. No further growth is expected.
“We are comfortable at this stage that the fire will not grow outside of its existing perimeter, but there may be fuels smoking in a few places in remote terrain,” said Chris Harper, current incident commander for Eagle Creek Fire.
An incident commander will remain on scene, the Forest Service said.
The fire started on Sept. 2. A 15-year-old from Vancouver is being charged for the fire, which burned over 50,000 acres in the Columbia River Gorge.
All charges are misdemeanors and a legal expert source told KOIN 6 News the 15-year-old is likely only to get probation. Technically, the maximum sentence the suspect could face is a year of incarceration for each charge and that it could be ordered consecutively, but that is not historically or legally what will happen.
The Multnomah Falls Lodge partially reopened on Wednesday.
“We are open for business,” said Lodge owner Rick Buck with a huge smile. “We are open for business. This is absolutely fantastic.”
