The Sunday after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year. Expect backups especially on I-84 west of Hood River where traffic is down to one lane in each direction.
Since the Eagle Creek Fire, eastbound I-84 traffic has been diverted onto one lane of westbound I-84. That leaves only one lane of traffic getting by in each direction near milepost 52. This traffic configurations stretches just over a mile so crews can clear debris from the adjacent Shellrock Mountain. Drivers can avoid the backups by taking an alternate route such as SR 14 or OR 35 to US 26.
Work on the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail is not expected to cause any delays over the holiday weekend. A six-mile section of the Historic Columbia River Highway from Larch Mountain Road to Bridal Veil re-opened Wednesday morning, 11 weeks after it was closed by the Eagle Creek Fire. The Vista House at Crown Point is also scheduled to re-open Wednesday. The Historic Columbia River Highway remains closed from just east of Bridal Veil to Ainsworth with no re-opening date.
The Multnomah Falls Lodge and the Multnomah Falls parking area on I-84 may re-open by the end of the year.
