SHERWOOD, Ore. (KOIN) — A young boy died Friday afternoon after being hit by a pickup truck the parking lot of an apartment complex in Sherwood.

A neighbor told KOIN 6 News the boy was playing on a scooter with his friends in the parking lot at the Creekview Crossing Apartments when he was hit. Bystanders and first responders tried to help the boy but he died at the scene from his injuries.

“Whoever the individual was that hit him, feeling for them too because they get to live with that,” witness Chris Marks said. You can’t run from that responsibly of knowing ‘Today I ended a child’s life because I was in a rush.'”

The driver stayed on the scene and is cooperating with police as the Sherwood Police Department and the Washington County Interagency Crash Team investigate. The police are not identifying the boy or the driver at this time.

“This was a very difficult call to respond to for all of our first responders,” a statement from the police department said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families touched by this incident.”
