PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland police say a reported shooting in the Pearl District Thursday morning turned out to be a man killing a dog after he was attacked.
PPB said they responded to a report of a shooting near the corner of Northwest 10th Avenue and Everett Street with little details on who had been shot.
In an Instagram post by PPB’s Central Bike Squad, police said when officers got there, they found a man bitten by a dog and bloodied.
Police said he then rushed to a trash can and threw inside what was later found to be a loaded black revolver. The man, who police said they knew as a convicted felon, was detained and treated for the bite wounds.
The dog was found shot dead inside a nearby tent. PPB said the man admitted to shooting the dog after being bitten.
He was taken to the hospital for further treatment. Authorities said after he’s discharged, they plan to arrest him on charges of felon in possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a loaded firearm.
Multnomah County Animal Control recovered the dog.
