PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An armed man who tried to rob Wildhorse Resort & Casino in Pendleton is in custody after a shootout with police, leaving a bystander injured, according to officials with the Umatilla Confederated Tribes and casino.
Tribal officials say officers intercepted the suspect at the door of the casino and resort, resulting in the shootout. Casino officials said the gunman was also injured in the shootout.
The conditions of the bystander and gunman, both taken to St. Anthony Hospital by ambulance, are currently unknown. No other injuries were reported.
Umatilla Tribal police, FBI and Umatilla County authorities are at the scene, according to tribal officials.
The site is now secure, tribal officials said; however, members of the public are advised to stay away from the area as officials continue to investigate.
“We are grateful no one else was physically injured with all that took place,” Gary George, Wildhorse CEO, said in a statement provided to KOIN 6 News. “Security personnel and Tribal Police were quick to act and the situation was controlled in a swift manner.
“Wildhorse employees are the best,” George’s statement continued. “The way the cashiers and everyone handled the situation was exemplary.”
In a statement to KOIN 6 News, the FBI said its working with law enforcement partners as agents respond to the scene and that while it could not release more details, “we can reassure the public that there is no information to suggest an ongoing public safety threat to the community.”
Wildhorse officials said the casino and resort’s food court is closed, but the rest of the property remains open.
No other details were immediately available.
