PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A young woman was killed and a man was wounded in an early Friday morning shooting in Portland’s Centennial neighborhood.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots around 3 a.m. at the Foothills Apartments complex on Southeast 174th Avenue.

Portland police found 19-year-old Logan K. Nettleton, a man who has not been named and a child inside of an upstairs apartment.

Nettleton died at the scene while the man — whom a family spokesperson identified as Nettleton’s boyfriend — was taken to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, officers said.

The child was not hurt and is being cared for.

Homicide detectives are assisting with this investigation. No arrests have been made so far. Officers searched the area but have not released any information regarding a potential suspect.

Nettleton’s family is heartbroken over the loss of the young woman, who was also the mother of a 4-year-old son. Her child was at his grandparents’ house at the time of the shooting.

Family spokesperson Vaune Albanese said Nettleton was a graduate of Madison High School and started classes last fall at Portland State University with a major in criminal justice.

“Logan was a young woman with a lot of passion,” said Albanese. “She really at an early age — and I think due to her parents’ influence — really had developed compassion for people who were being treated unjustly.”

As a teen mom, life came with some challenges for Nettleton. Her son was born premature and had many health issues. Albanese said the young mother loved her son fiercely.

The woman’s family believes more needs to be done by elected officials to put a stop to gun violence so other families don’t have to experience their grief.

“Logan had a life ahead of her which has been cut short,” said Albanese. “None of us will ever get to see what she could have done.”

Albanese said Nettleton’s boyfriend, who was shot multiple times, remains in the hospital and is fighting for his life.

A GoFundMe page has been launched to support Nettleton’s family with funeral and memorial expenses.

“Little King will be starting preschool soon and he’s going to have ongoing needs so if people feel it in their hearts to give through the GoFundMe page, it would be really appreciated,” said Albanese.
