LONGVIEW, Wash. (KOIN) — A 25-year-old man was arrested in Barstow, California and charged with the murder of a 73-year-old landlord in Longview.

David Daniel Jr. faces 1st-degree murder for the shooting death of Arthur Mahlum in his home.

Mahlum was found by a woman tenant around 8:20 p.m. October 27 who then called 911, authorities said. Officers rushed to the scene in the 2200 block of Birch Street.

Daniel was arrested October 31 on a California warrant. Detectives from the Longview Police Department flew to California to interview him and then arrested him for the murder.

Mahlum’s 1996 Chevy Silverado was found in Barstow, Longview police said.

The investigation is active and ongoing. More charges are likely, authorities said in a press release. Anyone who may have seen or been in touch with David J.E. Daniel Jr. between October 25-31 is asked to contact Detective Trevor Eades at 360.442.5800.

Family, neighbors shaken by killing

Arthur Mahlum’s son told KOIN 6 News his dad was a quiet soul who was a longtime employee for Weyerhauser before retiring. Mahlum has 3 adult children and grandchildren.

Neighbors who spoke with KOIN 6 News said he mostly kept to himself and they didn’t see him very much. Others believe he was renting out rooms at his house and said they had concerns about people coming and going.

Dick Cedergren, who said he’s live in the neighborhood for 40 years, said he’s just anxious for this case to be solved.

“A uniformed officer came and interviewed us to see if we had any idea of what could have happened and gone on,” Cedergren said.
