How to file for unemployment during a pandemic

According to Oregon Employment Department, it’s too early too tell what the employment impact of the response to COVID-19 has caused both nationally and in Oregon. Oregon’s unemployment rate was 3.3 percent in both January and February and not far behind the U.S.’s unemployment rate of 3.5 percent in February. The number of initial Unemployment Insurance claims rose from approximately 800 on March 15 to a total of 18,500 on March 17, the agency said.

Washington State’s Employment Security Department stated their most recent employment report is also prior to the significant impact they experienced from the COVID-19 outbreak. They said the state’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted monthly unemployment rate for February was 3.8 percent, according to the Employment Security Department. During the week of March 8-14, the new claims for unemployment benefits increased by 7,606 over the previous week.

Across the country, 3.3 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits the week of March 16, nearly five times the previous record set in 1982.

Individuals may be eligible to receive a one-time check of up to $1,200 as part of a $2 trillion pandemic response measure, the White House and U.S. Senate announced.
