You’ve probably driven down a street and never thought twice about who keeps it clean and tidy. Someone has to do it and in some cases, it could be one of your neighbors. Local governments like Washington County offer an Adopt-A-Road program and it’s extremely easy to get involved.
Adopt-A-Road is open to those who want to help keep Washington County beautiful by maintaining landscaping and picking up litter along the roads. Anyone can get involved including community groups, churches, businesses, and families.
All you have to do is agree to adopt a stretch of county road for at least two years. You then pick a one-mile stretch of the road you want to focus on. If you don’t have a preference, the county will help you decide and evaluate the stretch of road for safety. Then you agree to pick up litter there at least twice a year.
The county will lend you all that you need, such as safety vests, traffic safety signs, trash bags, and other materials. Anyone who is interested in participating in the program must be at least 12 years old.
If you would rather help with landscape maintenance than pick up trash, volunteers are needed to keep landscaped areas trimmed and beautiful at least twice a year for two years.
The county says the extra help saves money for taxpayers. For information about Washington County’s Adopt-A-Road program, call 503-846-ROAD
