PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The body of a 27-year-old climber who was reported missing earlier this week on Mt. Hood was found Thursday afternoon.

Officials say the search for Austin Mishler, a Bend resident, ended about 2 p.m. when crews found his body in a crevasse at about 9,400 feet in elevation on Mt. Hood’s north side.

Mishler, an experienced climber and wilderness guide, was last heard from on Monday evening and was expected to return on Tuesday evening after a camping trip and climb in the Eliot Glacier. He was reported missing around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office.

Search and rescue crews found his tent around 8,700 feet in elevation on the north side of Mt. Hood but it was empty.

Unfortunately, due to current climbing conditions, Mishler’s body has not yet been removed from the mountain; officials say they plan to retrieve him on Friday.

Crews from Crag Rats, Portland Mountain Rescue, Oregon Air National Guard 125th Special Tactics Squadron and Air Force 304th Rescue Squadron joined in the search efforts.
