MILWAUKIE, Ore. (KOIN) — Quiet, a man of few words, and somewhat of a mystery.

That’s how Lisa Veber describes her brother, Marty Nance. But ever since Jan. 6, the mystery about Marty isn’t a question of who he is, but where’d he go?

“Something has gone horribly wrong,” Veber said, “and we’re trying to find out why.”

On that day, Veber said Nance was supposed to show up for a National Guard drill, something he’d been talking about with his family over Christmas. He hadn’t missed a drill in 32 years with the National Guard. But, uncharacteristically, Nance didn’t show. Later, they found his car abandoned with only a cell phone left inside. No one has seen or heard from him since.

The disappearance, Veber says, doesn’t make sense.

“There’s a 1,000 puzzle pieces we’re trying to put together to create a picture of what was going on,” Veber said.

It’s been over a week, but Veber hasn’t given up hope they can find her brother. On Sunday, Veber and a large contingent of people who know Nance were out searching for him in Clackamas County, handing out fliers to anyone who would take one. It was the 3rd search they’ve conducted. Veber believes he’s still out there — somewhere.

“We’re uncovering every stone that we can to try and find him,” she said.

But they need help. Veber is asking police and local deputies to assist in the search. She said police think her brother’s disappearance was voluntary. She disagrees, pointing to all the belongings that he left in his home — he even left his toothbrush — and the phone he left in his car, an item he carried in the breast pocket of his jacket at all times.

“We’re asking law enforcement to take a bigger role in his disappearance,” she said, “and understand that he would never do this unless something has happened, and I think something is horribly wrong.

“We’re not qualified to do everything they can do.”

As for future searches, Veber said she plans to play it by ear. Over 100 people were out looking for him on Sunday. Electronic billboards with Nance’s information and photo were donated by Pacific Outdoor Advertising and Lamar Signs and can now be seen throughout the Portland area.

“I just want people to be on the lookout because I have reason to believe he’s still in the area,” she said.
