PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A 24-year-old man took a plea deal and will be sentenced later this month for killing a man during a 2014 drive-by shooting in North Portland.
In June 2015, a grand jury handed up an indictment that charged Marcell Lee Daniel, Jr. with one count of murder with a firearm and two counts each of attempted murder with a firearm and attempted aggravated murder with a firearm.
On Friday, Daniel plead guilty to one count of first-degree manslaughter and attempted murder. He will be sentenced on September 26.
According to prosecutors, the investigation began on June 30, 2014 when police responded to the New Columbia housing development in North Portland on reports of a shooting in the 4900 block of North Fessenden.
When officers arrived, they found Andrew Coggins dead. He had been shot twice, according to police.
Investigators found thirty 9mm shell casings at the crime scene. All 30 casings were fired from the same firearm, a 9mm caliber handgun.
Prosecutors claim that “several people have come forward” and identified Daniels as the person who killed Coggins. Investigators also have Daniels on tape confessing to the shooting, but claiming that it was an “accident,” according to court records.
Records show that Daniel will serve a minimum of 17.5 years in prison when he is formally sentenced.
